Berry

Berry is a tiny 12-pound terrier with a complicated past and a personality that requires an equally special person.

Before coming to us, Berry was listed for euthanasia at OC Animal Care because of her behavior. She was considered too unpredictable to be adopted directly to the public after repeatedly lashing out when she felt threatened. But with Berry, what looks like aggression is rooted in fear. She is an extremely insecure little dog who has experienced abuse, neglect, abandonment and instability. When Berry feels cornered or overwhelmed, or has her boundaries pushed too far, she will growl, snap, and make it extremely clear that she needs space. Her warnings can be intense, although she has never actually bitten anyone in our care.

Berry is not a dog who will immediately trust you. She is not a dog you should expect to pick up, cuddle, or handle however you want from day one. Trust with Berry has to be earned. And once it is, you begin to see the dog underneath all of that fear.

Since we rescued Berry in February 2026, she has made incredible progress. Her foster is now able to pick her up and bathe her, and Berry has shown her a side of herself that very few people were ever patient enough to discover. She cuddles. She seeks affection. She loves deeply. She has learned that at least one person in this world is safe.

Berry thrives with structure, routine, clear boundaries and consistency. She needs an adopter who will respect what she is communicating while also providing the stability and leadership she has been missing for most of her life. Her progress will not always move in a straight line. There will be victories, setbacks, good days and difficult ones. We are looking for someone who understands that before applying.

Berry's perfect adopter probably isn't asking, "What can this dog do for me?" They're asking, "What can I do for this dog?" We know that is a big ask. There are easier dogs to adopt: dogs who will settle in faster, trust you immediately, and never make you question whether you're making progress. Berry isn't one of those dogs.

But somewhere out there is a person who doesn't need her to be easy. Someone who sees a frightened little dog who has spent far too much of her life protecting herself, and wants to be the person who finally gives her permission to stop. After everything Berry has survived, we're committed to finding her that person. She doesn't need everyone to understand her. She only needs one person willing to.
